Student accommodation in Riga – international student guide
Plan your rental around your actual campus, the lease and your arrival date. This is general practical information, not legal advice. Private listings are not university dormitories or guaranteed student housing.

How to search
Use our rental filters to compare neighbourhoods, price, size and recorded bedrooms. Read the original portal advert and contact the advertiser or local agency. Ask whether students are accepted and whether the lease covers your study period. University housing and dorm offices also exist: use the official university links below to ask about availability and application procedures.
Confirm the teaching campus rather than relying on the university's central address. Compare the actual journey and view the property in person, or arrange a live video viewing before committing.
Deposits, contracts and your address
A deposit is commonly around one month's rent, but the amount is contractual, not a fixed rule. Get a written lease in a language you understand. Check the term, notice period, utility responsibilities, refund conditions and who can occupy the property. Obtain receipts and a signed inventory of the condition at move-in.
Ask whether you can register your address before signing. Check any agency payment terms and confirm that the person signing owns the home or holds written authority.
Timing around the September intake
The academic year generally starts in early September. Demand can peak in August–September, so start exploring neighbourhoods and contacting housing offices in early summer. Confirm your programme's actual dates and university accommodation deadlines. Do not let an approaching arrival date pressure you into an unverified payment.
Scams to avoid
Never pay before viewing and verifying the landlord or authorised agency. Warning signs include prices far below similar rentals, pressure to reserve immediately, a landlord who is “abroad”, copied photos, fake documents and requests for an untraceable transfer. Verify ownership through the relevant register or professional adviser, check names on the lease and payment account, and keep receipts. A document image alone is not proof of ownership.
Residence and migration rules
EU students should check residence registration and address declaration requirements. Non-EU students must follow the host country's visa and migration rules. A rental contract is not permission to reside. Confirm the current requirements with the official authority before arrival.
